Reloading Windows XP

Author If you have been running Windows XP for a couple of years or more you may find that it is not running quite as quickly and smoothly as it was when you did your first install. I am constantly ‘evaluating’ software and uninstalling and reinstalling beta software on my computer and have always gradually become more and more disappointed after nine months to a year with the performance of my PC. So I regularly do a backup and reinstall all my software, including Windows.
Please note that this is completely different than doing the standard things to troubleshoot and fix individual problems such as system errors or application errors. These things are better fixed by using a systme Restore which is a great new feature to Windows XP
For anyone that has reinstalled their operating system a few times the process seems pretty straightforward as they have found all of the gotchas the first few times. I have lost mail and contacts but not much else over the years by following (or not following) a system to reload my operating system and software. This purpose of this guide is to give you a checklist to follow so that a reloading of Windows goes smoothly the first time.
The steps are as follows:
1. Backup all data
2. Document your current system drivers and software
3. Delete the Windows and profile directories
4. Reload Window
5. Reload software and data.
6. Get some sleep
1. Backup data.
There are two methods of the process of reloading your operating system. The first is to just delete the system files and the second is to backup the files to CD or DVD and then format the hard drive completely, my preference is to delete the system folders and work from there as the actual formatting is not needed as much now as it was in the past.
It is very important to be sure to get a backup of all of your data. My current practice is to create a folder in the Root of the C: drive called “backup for reload” and copy all of my files in there. The first few times that I reloaded my machine I either saved all of the data to another hard drive so I could format my main drive or I would just create a folder to save my data in that was in the root of the C: drive and just deleted the Windows directory. One thing to be aware of is that a new install of Windows is going to delete your current profile where your data is kept, you will be warned in the install and I am warning you here as well!
First of all Windows likes to keep all of your documents in your “My Documents” folder and even though the icon is on the desktop the folder is actually in the following location: c:documents and settings . The documents and settings folder is quite important as it does have all of the files that are associated with you as a user. Other folders in documents and settings are “Favorites” “Application Data” and “Local Settings”.
If you use Outlook Express for your mail you will want to back up its folders. Open up Outlook Express and go to tools to options to maintenance and there is a button called “Store Folder” this will tell you where the folder is that holds all of your mail, usually located in
c:–> documents and settings(logon name)–> local settings–> Application Data–> Identities–> Microsoft–> Outlook Express”. Hard to find spot but important.
If you are using Outlook for your mail and contacts my policy has always been to search for all .pst files on your PC this will give you your main as well as archive folders and maybe even some long lost mail from before.
I also do a search and put the following in the search box *.doc;*.xls;*.ppt;*. mdb;*.pub this will search for all office documents on the PC, when I get the result I only backup the files that are not in my documents and settings for my name or in the my documents folder.
How big is your “Backup and Reload” folder now that you have all of your data in it? Can you back it up to a CD? Or two, or a DVD? This would be a nice time to do that save to a CD so that in the event of a catastrophic failure of your hard drive you can go back and reload your data later.
2. Document your current system drivers and software
So often when I am working on a computer I find that after a format and reload of Windows that I am missing a network card driver or a video driver. Before you turn off the computer to format it or delete the system files make sure that you have a copy of all of the drivers, realistically the only drivers that seem to change are the video drivers. What other drivers might you need? Well If you have the CD that came with the motherboard then you will probably only need to download the sound card, video, monitor, modem drivers and you can find the type of hardware by right clicking on the my computer and going to properties and then depending on your version of Windows look for the device manager. I do not tend to format my drive I only delete the Windows directory and the Documents and settings directory when I do a reload so I can then find the files later still sitting on the hard drive. My preference is to create a folder called mydrivers in the root of the C: drive so that after you reload Windows you will have a central place to go to find the drivers. Now just go out and download the drivers that you need.
3. Delete the Windows and profile directories
Now, this is where you have to take a deep breath before you get started as when we delete files we are not going to be able to get them back. When I delete files on the computer before I reinstall Windows I do not delete all of the files or format the drive. The only way that you can delete what you want is to use some kind of a boot disk that does not load Windows from your hard drive. I use the Ultimate Windows Boot CD and after I boot the drive up I move some data instead of deleting. More often than not I will have missed some important file so I create a “backup” folder that contains all of my data. I drop my current “Documents and Settings” folder into this backup folder and then also any applications from the “Program Files’ folder that may have some of their own files. This would include databases like Act or Maximiser and Tax software or book keeping software like Quicken. Most of the data files for applications are kept in the “My Documents” folder.
In the install of Windows you will need to have at least 2 gigs of free space so make sure that you have freed up enough space to do the install
When I am deleting folders I am most interested in deleting the” Documents and Settings” and “Windows” folders, as this is where you will find user settings as well as the registry both good and bad. If you are really aggressive you can also include the “Program Files” folder so that after you have reloaded Windows you can have the default settings for each application. I also delete any files that are sitting in the root of the C: drive.
4. Reloading Windows
Now that you have deleted the unneeded files and directories you will have to give yourself an operating system to reload all of your software into. I prefer Windows XP now although if you have a bit of an older computer Windows 2000 will probably be fine and takes less system resources.
Just a note here, Windows 98 is a bad choice and there are a few reasons why. Windows 98 is not supported anymore by Microsoft so it does not have any new security fixes or drivers being written for it. One other issue is that the underlying file system that Windows 98 supports is FAT32, if you are loading Windows 2000 or XP you will likely want to take advantage of NTFS but the only good way to do this with a fresh load is to format your machine, this will delete all of the data that you have on your PC now. If you are moving from Windows 98 there will be a spot in the install asking if you would like to format or convert the drive to NTFS, I would avoid this as you can convert after you have switched your PC to Windows XP in Disk Management from the Computer management application in Windows.
The rest of the install should go smoothly and after you have finished you will have a nice new clean install of Windows with only the recycle bin on the desktop and no applications. Perhaps the desktop is only 256 colors or the size is not quite right but this is where you will fix that problem by reloading your drivers. Go to start and right click on the “MY Computer” icon and select properties, go to the hardware tab, now find the device manager and anything with an exclamation point or a red X will need a new driver. Right click on the icon, select update driver and walk through finding your drivers. If you can not find the driver in the lookup then you may have to go back to the mydrivers folder and run the executables for the drivers which may quicken the process of loading new drivers.
5. Reload Software and Data
Now the slow torturous part of the Windows install begins. I always do this reloading of Windows because my computer has gradually slowed down from all of the software that I have loaded up and pledge never to do again, I have proven time and time again that I don’t live up to the pledge. The only software that I load first is Office XP and setup my personal settings and mail folders from Outlook (check around for this documentation as it varies with your version of Office) and I also install my commonly used utilities. I keep my software install disks close by and just load software as I need it over the next few days.
6. Get Some Sleep
Congratulations. This process is very long and occasionally we do lose data that was missed in the backup but after you are done you have a computer that is at least as good as the day you started using it. There are fewer errors, less hiccups and the computer is fast and responsive. Although it takes a long time I am more than willing to do it as long as I cleared some time beforehand as the difference in working with the computer for some time after is a real treat.

How to setup Linksys E4200 router:
You can setup your router with the help of Cisco connect software that comes with the router, Make sure that you have active Internet connection through the modem. Connect the main computer directly to the modem and make sure that you can access the Internet through the modem.
Connect the modem to the Internet port and computer to Ethernet port on the router. Press and hold the reset button on the router for 30 seconds. Release the reset button and wait for 30 seconds. Power cycle the router. Now run the Cisco connect software.
This software will setup your router automatically. It will create 2 wireless networks. One for your main network and other one for the guest people. You can connect your own computers and devices to the main wireless network. The guest network can be used for the people who want to access the Internet only. Guest network is a virtual wireless network to access the Internet through your router. The computers connected to the guest network will be able to access the Internet only. These computers will not be able to access your main network and files and computers and printers in the main network.
You can manage guest network settings using the web interface of the router. So it is not necessary to install the Cisco connect software to manage guest network as it was the case in E1000, E2000 and E3000 wireless routers. In these routers the guest network can be created and managed only using the Cisco connect software. For E4200 router Linksys has included Guest network settings using web UI of the router. The wireless connection speed using E4200 will be 300+ mbps. All the ports on E4200 router are Gigabit ports.
If you have a USB storage device then you can connect the USB storage device to the router and share it within the network. Computers connected to the guest network will not be able to access the USB storage device.
How to Install a Huawei E220 Modem in Ubuntu Linux
The Huawei E220 modem is a powerful device capable of internet speeds of up to 3.6 Mbps. Whereas its’ set up in windows is relatively easy; it can be a bit of a headache in Ubuntu Linux and other Linux versions.
The setup method described here has been tested with Ubuntu Linux version 8.04 (hardy heron). To begin with, ensure that you have wvdial installed. There are two ways of establishing if you have wvdial installed, these are;
open the synaptic package manager (Main menu >System >Administration >Synaptic Package Manager) and scroll through the list of installed items to see if it is included, or,
open a terminal and type this code: sudo apt-get install wvdial
Once you have your wvdial installed, ensure your modem is plugged into an available USP port. Then in your terminal type this code,
Sudo wvdialconf
This command reads all of the settings you will need directly from your modem and writes them to a file called wvdial.conf. Type another command in your terminal as follows;
sudo gedit /etc/wvdial
This will invoke your text editor (gedit) to open the file at location /etc/wvdial.conf, with administrative priviledges (sudo). The file will look something like this:

The Phone, Password and Username are not specified and are also preceded by a semicolon followed by a space. First of all delete the semicolon’s and spaces so that P,P and U respectively are the first characters on their lines. Next following the same format as the completed fields add an equal sign (=) to each line and give them a value, so you should have something that looks like this.

The phone number depends on your Internet Service Provider and may not necessarily be *99#. You can confirm your provider’s number by looking it up on their website. If you still cannot get it then contact your provider.
Before you save the file and exit, make a note of the second word in the first line, in the case of my example (Defaults). This is the name of the profile you will need to invoke for a connection. Press Alt-F2 and type this code;

Or replace the word ”Defaults” with whatever was in the first line of your wvdial.conf.
If you wish for your modem to connect automatically at log on, take your mouse to the panel menu and navigate through System, Preferences, Sessions and under the “Startup Programs” Tab, click the “Add” button and where it says “Command” type this code:

Be sure also to fill in the “Name” box, but what you type in there is up to you, simply “Huawei” or “E220″ may be ideal for your own future reference. Open your browser and you should be up and running. If you get a message saying “Offline Mode” This is just a default setting in Firefox, simply click on “File” in the browser’s menu and in the tool bar de-select “Work offline”.

The rise of inefficiencies that prevail in many business send many business owners on a quest to outsource product manufacturing or specific service requirements. Used correctly, the ability to use outsourcing can improve operational performance and individual job quality no matter whether the outsourced activity provided is product or services. If so, to what extent is it appropriate for your business?
The idea of outsourcing has grown beyond the idea of product or component part production. The initial concept of supply-chain management coupled with lean manufacturing techniques support outsourcing components and can be illustrated well when reading Henry Ford’s comments on the subject:

Businesses are increasingly hiring specialized service firms that perform services that they used to provide for themselves. A company’s ability to specialize or provide a more sophisticated service creates opportunities not previously available for many businesses. Growth in the underlying need for services is driven by several factors including the need for increased sophistication, globalization, and the ever-increasing aspect of management complexity.2 Specialized forms of services have proliferated, as has the complexity of needs in such established service industries as advertising, accounting, consulting, information systems, market research, and investment banking. The companies that are able to create advantages by working smarter and staying cost competitive will be the companies that will have the ability to survive the increased competition, aggressive pricing, and sustain the threats from international competition.
Are products and services affected in the same way? Specialization and sophistication are occurring in both areas. However, services are actually being de-integrated or removed from the businesses. This de-integration result actually is a net increase in service provision being provided to the organization. The trend in graphic arts industries is toward integration, or in-house provision, though this industry is considered non-traditional and does not reflect the trend by the majority of other service industries.3
By far the greatest reason for lack of outsourcing within any industry, no matter whether product of service related, is the fear of loss of control. The pervasive thought that the product can be produced better or the service performed better can be an inherent part of a business culture that can cause stagnation and large inefficiencies. Individual managers or owners will many times decide that the opportunities to vertically integrate demand in-house functions to remain “in-house”. Thus maintaining quality standards that cannot be supposedly matched by outside sources or incur increased costs that will impact the sale of the product or service.
The services that are being provided have grown and are continuing to grow due to three underlying factors: the specific need for increased sophistication by service providers, the de-integration of services previously performed as an in-house function, and the privatization of public services.4 Many of these service firms have reinvented themselves during the last decade due to the increased use of information technology. It has allowed increased productivity from the individuals that are part of the firm as well as increased the amount of information and number of services each service firm can offer to their clients. Many of the services are now automated which provide immediate access without a need for direct customer interface. The airlines have taken automated ticketing to new heights via the telephone and the Internet. The new technologies are both the cause and effect of changes the industry structure and the source of major competitive advantage in many service industries.5
Multi-service firms allow their clients to tap into a broader selection of available services. At the root of the growth of these firms is a type of systemization that allows efficient and consistent replication of the services at multiple clients due to standardized employee procedures, internal methodology, automation of the actual service tasks performed by the individual. This has spawned another critical aspect that allows firms to narrow their focus of specialization for their clients. Take for instance, a consulting firm that offers multiple service functions but has true expertise in only a couple of areas. This broad approach has given way to increasingly specialized services such as human resource management, compensation modeling, and strategy definition to name just a few. Specialization leads the service firms to a much more narrow focus which provides better service in the specific areas of client need.
There are several advantages of having a narrower focus within the service firm. Among them are the economies of scale that the service firm can gain with the specificity of a narrow focus area. For example, diagnostic service programs that can be run via a phone modem at a remote location of the client can check software programs and often even correct the problem. Other types of enhanced communication can provide data processing, telemarketing functions, or answering services possible. These are closely related to the centralization needs of the client and are specifically scale-sensitive meaning that activities provided by the service firm are adapted to the client’s need to service their clientele on a regional, national, or on a world-wide basis.
Additionally, the aspect of competition and focus are potent advantages for the outside service provider. In-house service departments are at the very least cost centers for the business. This is not to say that an in-house service facilitator cannot be profitable. It does, however, mean that the policies, procedural methodologies, and accomplishments should be regularly measured to not only justify the existence of the department, but also provide adequate pressures and performance incentives when faced with outside service alternatives.
At the same time, in-house service departments do face inherent constraints.6 Understanding barriers that are constraining for a business helps ownership and management better evaluate the performance requirements necessary for an in-house service department to function well. Given the limitations, such as compensation structures and employee benefit packages, those responsible for making the decision should probably opt to outsource the services instead of having them handled internally.
“In-house service units are housed at expensive locations, subject to corporate salary structures and benefit plans, constrained in some cases from using part-time workers, and live under other guidelines that are inappropriate for the nature of the service function provided. The independent service provider, conversely, tailors every aspect of its value chain to the particular service involved.”7
The concept of increased cyclicality should be considered by the organization facing inefficiencies. Cyclicality increases the inefficiency of maintaining a permanent service function in-house which provides companies alternatives to converting a fixed cost into a variable one.8 They need only to call on these companies, as the organization requires their services.
Recognized Opportunities to Outsource
Similarity of Service Needs – The aspect of service needs that organizations require have similarities whether competing at the local level or on a global scale. Some service needs may be industry specific, or even segment specific. For example, consulting services tailored to niche industries require years of expertise to understand specific nuances that affect industry trends requiring specific client recommendations. As the demand for services globalizes and competition becomes greater, the actual service performance at the local level may provide a cost advantage to the client. This allows for competition to be somewhat “equalized” for the local firm regardless of a whether the competing firm is considered to have global reach.
Mobility of Buyers – With increased information flow throughout the world, the opportunity for global service firms increases at the local level. In past years, buyers were confronted with minimum options when faced with the need to take in-house services out for bid. The buyer’s perspective has increased substantially providing the buyer’s organization opportunities today that may have existed in prior years, but were not available or familiar to the buyer. Additionally, the aspect of paying in different currencies is continuing to be less of a concern since many trading blocks have adopted a common currency thus relieving the concern of loss due to currency fluctuation. The Euro is probably the best and most recent example of this.
Rising Economies of Scale and Geographic Scope – The advantages that drive local service competition to open multiple offices or locations are prevalent at the global level as well. It is easier today than at any other time in history for companies to establish an international presence for services that can be outsourced. Economies of scale allow these companies to spread costs in areas such as information technology, personnel training, and capabilities to enhance topline sales revenues. The advantage of global positioning by an organization allows for growth in areas of brand cache, local personnel participation with global perspectives, and the overall advantage of serving other multinational firms similar in scope.
Greater Mobility of Service Personnel – The aspect of telecommuting has grown in recent years because many people prefer to work from home, or are unable to make the commute efficiently to the home office of the service firm. In-home workers are providing companies the opportunity to reap large benefits on productivity and employee satisfaction unobtainable in prior years. If travel is required, the ability to get to an international location is relatively easy and customer contact is relatively short. This again provides economies of scale for the employing organization which enhance the solution for their client.
Information Exchange – Buyer interaction at a distance today is to be expected given the overwhelming amount of information available via the click of a mouse. Samples are available via overnight delivery services. Emails and telephones provide instant access to other individuals needed in the buying process. Employee assessment and testing are available through many consulting service firms where the client has access to use licensed information technology at their discretion and the consulting firm has virtually no client interaction, unless required by the client, except to invoice for the services. This type of service function allows for more access to remote buyers whether face-to-face or not. Employee behavioral assessments illustrate this point well.
Wide Disparities in Cost or Quality – Huge differences remain in costing methods and overall quality of services that can be outsourced. This is true at both the domestic and international level. It is becoming easier today to setup service facilities in India or China due to availability of personnel and the overall cost of the facility itself. Many countries have not made the jump to service outsourcing from manufacturing outsourcing as yet. However, as the world’s population continues to grow and the state of development by country is opportunistic, the proliferation of service industries will be advanced.
Buyer/Supplier Relationships – The relationship between the buyer and the supplier is pivotal in the use of service firms for the organization. There are two considerations that should be taken into account when mentioning this aspect. The first is without a local manufacturing base, the demand for outsourced services will be limited. The second is the actual structuring of the manufacturing sector which can strongly influence the types of services to be provided. A certain amount of sophistication is required in order for specialized service firms to exist and be successful such as specialized software application companies or consulting services.9 On the other hand, economies of many third world countries that are non-manufacturing based have no need or demand for out-sourced services. The point being that the more sophisticated service-based economies is more apt to take advantage of the out-sourcing opportunities.
Outsourcing is truly a quality of life issue that faces individual owners and corporate business entities alike. Mature industries where specialized firms are available to be used, should determine what their core competencies are and how they impact exploitation of the firm’s competitive advantage. The organization’s core competencies should be protected at all costs.
Firms are demanding more opportunities to use outside services that provide increased product quality or sophistication of services. The opportunity to find specific areas that will benefit from these services can make a company more profitable, time efficient, and productive. Employed as a viable company strategy, outsourcing will enhance an organization’s ability to sustain upward growth patterns and explore new opportunities by using redefined human resources within the business.

How Do I Set Up My Wireless Network at Home?
Wireless home networks are becoming more and more popular these day. The ease of installation and the practicality of being able to surf the net anywhere in the house makes wireless home networks very attractive to internet users. Setting up a wireless home network is quite easy but you need to know some basic things about wireless networks before attempting to start the set up. You can read up more about the wireless networking protocols to help you get a better understanding of wireless networking.
To set up a wireless home network you need to have broadband internet connection with a cable or DSL modem. The common set up at home is usually that of the desk top computer being plugged directly into the modem. In this tutorial we will assume that you have a laptop that you want to connect wirelessly to the PC that is connected to the internet. You need some hardware to make this possible. First you need to have a wireless router. You also need to add a USB wireless network adapter to your desk top PC and a PC card-based network adapter for your laptop computer. For obvious reasons, it is advisable to choose the same vendor for all the additional hardware you buy. Refer to the documentation that comes with your hardware for the installation process.
When you already have all the necessary hardware installed, you can begin the set up. First you need to unplug or turn off the DSL modem then connect the wireless router to the modem. You can check the documentation that came with your hardware for assistance. When you’ve set it up your computer will wirelessly connect to your router. The next step is to configure your wireless router. With Internet Explorer you can go to your router’s configuration page.
Most of the default settings there are rather safe left alone but there are some things that you need to configure. You need to choose a unique wireless network name or SSID, this will be the name of your network. Be sure that no one around that is near you is using the same name. The next step is, if your router requires it, to provide a unique passphrase that it will use to generate some keys. Then the last step to do before you are done with configuring the router is setting your administrative password. Choose a password that is not easy to guess and not too short for security reasons. Be sure to save every setting you’ve configured. The actual steps involved in configuring these settings vary according to the kind of router you have.
The next step is to configure your laptop’s network adapter. It is easy to follow Window’s XP’s on-screen instructions for this one. Right-click the icon for wireless network in your task bar and select “View Available Wireless Networks” in the pop up menu that appears. The Wireless Network Connection window will show and there you will see the name you chose for your wireless network listed. Click Refresh network list in the upper-left corner if you don’t see your network. You will then be prompted to enter a key, this is the key that you wrote down in both the Network key and Confirm network key boxes. Click Connect. You will then see connection progress as it connects to your network. When you’re already connected you can close the Wireless Network Connection window. You’re done, you’ve set up wireless connection.
Linksys E1000 Router Set Up and Troubleshooting
All Linksys E series routers work on the N technology. You can get wireless speed up to 300 Mbps. You can connect wireless computers, wireless printers and other Wi-Fi devices up to 300 Mbps. Linksys E1000 is nothing but Linksys WRT160N router with a new Cisco connect software.
All the E series routers have Gigabit Ethernet ports which can give you speed up to 1000 Mbps wired connection speed. E1000 router works on 2.4 GHz wireless signal. E2100L router also works on 2.4 GHz wireless signal. This router has a USB port on it. You can connect the USB hard drive to the router and share the hard drive with all the computers connected in the network. E2000 and E3000 routers work on 2.4 GHz as well as 5 GHz powerful wireless signal. You can connect your gaming devices, blue ray players, DVR system to this router for smoother and faster video streaming.
Linksys E1000 router setup:
All the E series routers come with the great Cisco connect software for the easy installation. Before installing the router, make sure that your Internet is working properly through the modem. Connect your computer directly to the modem and try to go on line. If you are able to access the Internet from the modem, then your Internet is working properly. Now insert the CD in to the same computer. Do not run the CD on any other computer. Use the same computer that you used to connect to the modem. Follow the steps of the CD. It may not ask you to connect the computer to the router. But it is recommended that you should connect your computer to the router for the initial set up of the router. You will need to connect the computer to one of the Ethernet port on the router and the modem to the Internet port on the router. That means there will be 2 connections to the router. Now go to the next step on the set up CD. It will take up to 5 minutes to set up the router.
Definitely you can setup the router without CD also. You just need to open the setup page of the router and change the settings manually.
The Cisco connect software is a very intelligent tool. It will check your Internet connection settings and it will try to set up your router automatically according to those settings. It will also create wireless network automatically with the unique network name and password. On the final step you will see that the router is set up successfully. It will open the window where you can check the settings of the router. It will create an option on your computer in the all program list. If you want to change the settings of the wireless network, you can open the Cisco connect software and change the settings.
The Cisco connect software will run only on Windows XP with Service Pack 3, Windows Vista with Service Pack 1 or better, Windows 7, Mac OS X Tiger 10.4.9, Mac OS X Tiger 10.4.11, Mac OS X Leopard 10.5.8, Mac OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.1.
This software will also give you option of parental control where you can limit the access to the Internet according to time as well as websites. This software is capable of creating a guest network access. You can limit the number of guest computers. The guest wireless network will be totally a different wireless network. This guest network works on different IP address range so that the guest people can not share your main wireless network. The guest will not be able to access the router settings or the computers in the main network. But you can set up the Guest network only if you run the Cisco connect software.
Once you have the main computer up and running through the router. You can use a small flash drive to create a set up key. On your other wireless computer, connect this USB set up key and run the program. It will connect your computer to the wireless network automatically. It will search for the wireless network and it will connect on its own. You don’t need to do anything. You can run the USB set up key only if the wireless connection is managed by the windows connection manager. If you change the wireless settings of the router using the set up page of the router, the Cisco connect software will stop working.
If you are not able to set up the router using the Cisco connect software, you can set up the router manually. But you will not be able to use the advantages of Cisco connect software like USB set up key or Guest network access. You can open the set up page of the router and change the Internet connection settings manually according to the Internet service provider.
The hardware warranty for Linksys E series router is 1 year but the free technical support is only for 90 days.
